Diabetes Program

Preventing and Treating Diabetes

Millions of people in the United States struggle with diabetes and its long-term effects, including many Native Americans and Alaska Natives. At the Blackhawk Health Center, we aim to help our patients overcome this epidemic through our Diabetes Program.

The program helps patients access diabetic shoes, glasses, testing supplies, and advanced eye screenings with the Joslin Vision Network. It also includes many health and wellness-focused events and programs, including:

  • The Diabetes Prevention Program
  • Eagle Adventure Program
  • Cooking demonstrations
  • The Sac and Fox Health Fair
  • Elder’s Olympics
  • Summer reading programs
  • Gardening efforts
  • Jim Thorpe Day
  • The Black Hawk Walk
  • Various community health efforts

About the Special Diabetes Program

Congress established the Special Diabetes Program for Indians in 1997, to respond to the diabetes epidemic among AI/AN people. The SDPI provides funds to IHS, Tribal, and Urban Indian communities across the United States to support programs and services that help prevent and treat diabetes.

The Blackhawk Health Center’s Diabetes Program is supported by SDPI funding. For more information on how the SDPI helps us promote the health of patients in our community, please contact us.
